A dinner party. A stolen emerald. And murdered dinner guests.
Barnaby Wilcox is out of his element. He accepts an invitation to an evening at a mansion of all places. Still, it’s a free meal and a chance to forget his problems for one night. Could be fun.
But when a priceless gem disappears and his fellow guests start dying off, Barnaby knows this isn’t going to be the relaxing trip he’d envisioned. As the body count grows and a violent storm traps everyone in the mansion, Barnaby must maintain his own sanity to pacify a group of people who are rapidly succumbing to paranoia and fear—if he, or any of the other guests, is going to make it through the night alive.

What an interesting story. First of all, I have never read a Western, but after finishing Erik Carter's story, I have a new liking for this genre. *Note: There were a small handful of typos, though nothing too terrible.Barnaby Wilcox, the MC, is an outlaw, but somehow you find yourself enjoying being around his sense of humor, zippy life, and thoughtful investigative mindset. This story was fun-filled and mysterious. The setting, a third of the way in, reminded me of an Agatha Christie novel or the movie Clue. Carter sets up the "Who-dun-it" appeal in a satisfying way. The plot is good and effective in terms of presenting a realistic feel of a 19th century setting. And who could write a story from a bad guy's point of view (though certainly not the worst guy of the bunch) and have us rooting for him? This story is a fun thrill ride that will have you tipping your hat to those who look at you cross-eyed! (less)

The Preston Emerald Barnaby Wilcox Wild West Mystery Series Book 2 edition by Erik Carter Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Lots of action. Enjoyable story.
Didn't care for the style of writing. Otherwise an OK book
This was an okay read. Nothing really made sense to me. Felt like I was reading the "Clue Game" of the older days.
Another great story from the author of this story. Will check out what the next story will be out. Will do that now.
I believe that I enjoyed the Preston Emerald even more than Clement's Kettle! What a fun book, with all the color, and surprises! It is a page-turner and I couldn't stop reading! I can only hope that there wil be more in this series with Barnaby Wilcox and his adventures..
Not so much a wild west mystery, more in the realm of
A Sherlock Ho!mes whodunnit. A group of people
gathered together in the mansion of some mysterious
man, they become stranded, and a murder occurs when
the lights go out (best time!) And, yes, the guy has a
butler. It's up to Barnaby to figure it out.
Hope this series continues!
A truly fun Western with intriguing characters, both good and bad. Fast paced and full of action. The writer needs to understand that Spell Check is not always our friend in that it allows the wrong words to be used at times as long as they're spelled correctly and does nothing to correct punctuation. I'll be looking for more from this author, though.
