I like this book as it is a book of juxtapositions - be in the world and (carefully) be of the world.
The art work grabs your attention and is raw.
We live in a world where fashion and celebrity are increasingly taking place of spirit and meaning. Neither fashion nor celebrities are bad on their own, but we imbue them with supreme importance and meaning. On its own, fashion can be a joyful and creative process - a way for a person to live creatively in a world and bring beauty to it.
However, the dark side of fashion is reactionary process whereby individuality is supplanted by the few and homogenized. The calm inner voice of "I like this" is stomped on by an industry's idea of what is right for you and its demand to consume more.
This book uses fashion and our relationship to it as a way to examine ourselves and Buddhist teachings. What does our relationship to fashion and Buddhism show us about greed, contentment, charity, creativity, confidence, consumerism as ritual, etc.
Josh does an excellent job of examining these ideas and conflicts while walking us through Buddhist teachings in a relaxed way.
Plus, you can't be the price.
We are aversive to pain. We are restless.
We are craving for pleasure. And we all want more.
We all want more yet often do not take the time to listen to what the universe is telling us.
Wonderful teachings, art work and certainly had me thinking about ways I view the world and what the Buddha's teachings mean to me.

This book, like Josh Korda's other teachings available on his podcast site, is an excellent entry into learning about Buddhism. I find his style to be easy to understand, accessible, and useful in navigating the challenges experienced in daily life. I think the entry point of fashion and style lend themselves nicely to opening up a discussion on Buddhist ideas and thought. I particularly like how the conversation starts with a specific question directly about fashion, but ends with a deeper understanding how the Buddha's teachings relate to things beyond fashion too. Josh Korda brings his down to earth style to this conversation and makes everything seem clear in a matter-of-fact way. I can't say enough about his abilities as a teacher, and this book is just another example of his skills in relating ancient ideas to a modern world. The book's gritty artwork also adds to the discussion and complements the words. This is a fun and interesting read for anyone interested in learning more about the fundamentals of Buddhism from such a thoughtful teacher.
This is unique and fun text provides a clear, comprehensible explanation of many of the core teachings of Theravadan Buddhism, within the the framework of a dialogue on the possibilty of overlap between Buddhism and fashion--"buddha style." While the entwinement or overlap between fashion (and especially the fashion industry) is, according to NYC Dharma Punx teacher, Josh Korda, minimal at best, he deftly navigates the questions about those possible connections and gives readers much to consider about the path to peace of mind and diminishing rather than contributing to the competitiveness, conflict, inequality, and violence that are endemic to capitalist society. Based on Korda's reflections, it might be fair say that the strongest connection between fashion and Buddhism is in punk rock, namely in its anti-consumerist ethos and critique of the status quo. If you're at all interested in buddhism, fashion, punk rock, peace of mind, and fun art (the illustrations by Jesse Bercowitz are as lively as the dialogue), buy this book. And embrace the irony that this particular act of consumption just might help you to be a bit more happy.

"Buddha Style" came about as the result of a series of interviews I gave with Otto von Busch, of Parsons The New School, over the course of a few weeks in October 2012. Jesse Bercowitz offered us his wonderful illustrations, which were created well before the project came about, so the relationship between illustrations and content is tangential. The book focuses on buddhist views on identity, creativity, consumerism and fashion.
The five stars are for Otto's hard work and Jesse's illustrations, not my answers.

This sparkling little gem explores the modern question how do those of us trying to live by the precepts of the Buddha reconcile our love for fashion as a means of artistic expression?
Josh Korda, American Buddhist scholar and teacher, responds to the probing queries of Otto von Busch, self-described "heretic of haute couture". The graffiti-like illustrations by award-winning sculptor and installation artist Jesse Bercowetz provoke and jest along the way.
The collaborators have drawn on their substantial street cred to help us think about our "identity constructions" as represented by fashion, recognizing them to be no more than "roles or masks to accomplish tasks in the world...putting on costumes to sell ourselves to others." They argue that as long as we understand this activity "as a game, rather than as an expression of some inner authentic truth...there's little harm that comes from it." They offer many other delightful insights regarding the symbolism of how we present ourselves in the social domain, while striving for non-self in the spiritual domain; the fundamental impermanence and ephemerality of fashion, echoing a foundational concept in Buddhism; and the potential for fashion as a tool of self-awareness.
This treatise is guaranteed to engage readers at any point they may find themselves in their spiritual wanderings, especially if they seek the unbeaten path.
