Albion Tourgee was among the greatest 19th century American authors. This one is the story of a Black family and some "carpetbagger" schoolteachers during Reconstruction. The "carpetbaggers" were actually the civil rights workers of the 19th century -- not angels but many of them idealistic, courageous people working to fight racism. Tourgee himself was a "carpetbagger" -- a Union officer who served with distinction and moved to North Carolina after the war to do what he could to heal the wounds of war and slavery. He was a judge and set up a rent-to-buy system for freed slaves to buy farms and livestock. For his pains he was attacked viciously by the Ku Klux Klan and finally driven out of North Carolina (he pretty surely would have been murdered if he stayed). The famous short story writer O'Henry, a strong racist, seems to have been a member of the Klan and drew an obnoxious picture of Tourgee fleeing the state. Later, Tourgee was the lawyer for the Black children who challenged segregation in the famous case of Plessy v. Ferguson -- he lost the case but helped keep the fight against racism alive during the Jim Crow period and the years when Americans largely turned our back on fundamental human rights.Bricks Without Straw was a best seller in the 1880's. It is a vivid, compelling account of Reconstruction, largely from a Black perspective. It's obscure mainly because anyone tarred as a "carpetbagger" was off limits for most American literature courses for a very long time. Characters are vivid, story is fascinating. Some unusual views of American politics are worked in--for example, Tourgee believed that the South may have been defeated in the civil war, but ultimately won the war to the extent it was over how American politics and society would be shaped for the next century. I for one believe he was correct. Read it and you'll gain some very deep understanding of our past.

Interesting, not a bad read
Story was interesting but the writing was difficult to follow especially the collectal speech. The author did a lot of editorizing which also added to the difficulty in reading.
